Rory Award Notes New Winners

5th-grader Madelaine Sereda wins Rory Award for her essay on “the responsibilities of being a good citizen.”

In this day and age, a good citizen is a valued and precious commodity. Good citizens, however, are made not born. Barry Bakal, a close friend of the Deutsch family, recognizes this, which is why he puts time and effort into creating The Rory Award Program.

Started in 1999, the Program is a unique way of nurturing responsibility in our children. The Rory Award Program reinforces the ongoing “CARE” program at Indian Trail School in Highland Park. The school’s objective is to help every child feel valued and respected. It is also a way to keep Rory’s memory alive so future generations of Indian Trail students will continue to be inspired by Rory’s willingness to help others.

Perhaps wanting to assist others is the ultimate definition of good citizenship. Each year we have the opportunity to appreciate written and artistic interpretations as students at Indian Trail are asked to express their feelings about “the responsibilities of being a good citizen.”

2nd –grader Jeremy Foreman wins Rory Award for his artistic interpretation of the theme.

There was a terrific effort this year and the school is proud to announce the following winners for 2004. Jeremy Forman, a second grader earned honors for his superb drawing depicting good citizenship. Madelaine Sereda, a fifth grader wrote the winning essay. Congratulations to all participants.
