Letter from
the Founders

Hope...Dream...imagine...

“Life’s experiences are more memorable when they are shared.” These words, aptly stated by Duke basketball coach, Mike Krzyzewski, describe the very essence of The Rory David Deutsch Foundation. Our events experienced in 2002 exemplified the success of The Foundation’s mission and continue to be memorable for all those involved.

“Under the Stars for Rory” was held at Goebbert’s Farm, September 28, 2002. The Goebbert family opened their farm but, more importantly their hearts, to provide the perfect setting for our family event. Children and adults of all ages enjoyed the many festivities. The pig races, pumpkin eating dinosaur, corn maize and hay rides, to mention a few activities, provided fun for all. Special thanks to our generous donors for providing the amazing auction items, the wonderful raffle prizes, and the incredible goodie bags.

On October 4, 2002, we were treated to an extraordinary night, “An Evening With Coach K”. The opportunity to experience the stirring presentation by Mike Krzyzewski was emotional and exhilarating. From the welcome to the extensive video program, he emphasized the importance of “being a part of something bigger than yourself, being on a team, Rory’s team”! Finally, as a symbol of unity and commitment to serve as a reminder of the feeling of the evening, Coach K pledged to wear a Rory pin at every Duke basketball game. His leadership by example continues to be an inspiration.

The Foundation’s selection as beneficiary of Highland Park High School’s 2003 charity drive was the culminating event of the year. From the selection process through the drive’s activities, we experienced the dedication, passion, and commitment of the entire student body and faculty. The charity drive is but another example of our philosophy of kids involvement in all of The Foundation’s endeavors.

Rory’s friend, Kelly, speaks often of a quote that is so applicable, “aspire, inspire, what have you done to change the world today?” We cannot think of anything more appropriate in describing every one of Rory’s supporters. Your continued love and devotion is overwhelming beyond what words can express. Thank you for sharing and making these experiences so memorable.

If a seven-year-old boy can change the way the world sees pediatric brain tumors, imagine what we can do together.
