Warm Glow at Goebbert’s Under the Stars for Rory

Last September, there was a substantial glowing in Hampshire, Illinois. Some came from the carved pumpkins at Goebbert’s Pumpkin Farm, but the brightest glow came from participants enjoying a warm, wonderful time at our Foundation family event, “Under the Stars for Rory”.

“It was a different kind of event and we had a very enthusiastic group of people in attendance,” explained Robin Baba, co-chair of this wonderful day. “ The weather was absolutely perfect! The transformation of the farm was incredible, families spent time together picnicking and taking part in other activities including, a corn maize, pig races, a petting zoo, dancing, a hayride to the pumpkin patch, plus a fabulous dinner catered by Marcello’s in Chicago. I think it was one of the nicest events ever, “she concluded.

The frosting on the pumpkin was the fact that close to $200,000 was raised on behalf of Rory and the fight against pediatric brain tumors. Beth Conen, co-chair, estimated that as many as 1,000 people were in attendance. This number was impressive, as the farm was some distance away. According to Beth, the trip was more than worth it. She added that the Goebbert family “was unbelievable to work with. They were very inventive, and contributed many ideas in addition to our own. Whatever we wanted was fine and their whole family pitched in to help.”

Beth described the many events that took place under the big tent. They included dancing to hip sounds played by a D.J. from Bizar Entertainment, hoola hooping, and whooping it up in general. “I also have to mention the unbelievable goodie bags,” Beth said. “They were jam-packed. Everyone received a wonderful watch and a t-shirt silk screened with drawings created in Rory’s memory by Mrs. Baker’s second grade class at Indian Trail Elementary School. Also included was a big, black, floppy hat decorated with a Rory design. That is just the start. People also received a foldout chair, flashlight, and gift certificates to Dalaj Men’s Clothing in Highland Park and Auntie Anne’s Pretzels. This was not just a goodie bag, it was great!”

What more could anyone want? How about a free pumpkin to take home? Better still, how about a chance to win a ‘65 Mustang Convertible, or a brand new Lexus as well as other amazing raffle prizes? “There was also a very successful silent auction,” she said, “which featured sports memorabilia, shopping sprees, dinners at restaurants, and more.”

The co-chairs also praised the contributions of so many who gave money, time, talent, and needed support, including the helpful DePaul University Volunteers.

The sun set on a day, which will long be remembered. Robin and Beth are to be recognized for their hard work in making it a success. Their reasons for wanting to be an integral part of the event are summed up beautifully in the “Under the Stars for Rory” program in which they write: “Our memory of Rory and the courageous battle he fought are the driving forces behind all our efforts. We remember his inquisitive mind, and think of all the possibilities that could have been. With that in mind, we are striving to make a difference in his honor.” Warm and enlightened thoughts, indeed.
