When the dads and sons of Deerfield’s South Park Jammers started their monthly get togethers several years ago, they never thought their annual charitable event would be held in honor of another little boy.

In November last year, the informal network of 22 dads and their (now) 4th grade sons, blitzed Deerfield’s Lake-Cook & Waukegan Road intersection selling custom-wrapped Hershey’s chocolate bars for $2 each. The kids, who mostly attend South Park elementary school in Deerfield, sold all 500 candy bars in three to four hours and brought in $1,000 for the Rory David Deutsch Foundation to benefit pediatric brain tumor research.

“Every year we focus one monthly event on a charitable activity, like one year we brought food to the elderly,” said Marc Miller, one of the dads and organizers of the Jammers. “These kids deserve recognition for realizing what it was they were doing this for, not focusing so much on the actual dollar amount. Recognition also should go to Howard Kaufman, who stood up and suggested this great idea for last year’s charity.”
