Deutsch tourney a real success

Officially, this was a big success.

First of all, the event — the Rory David Deutsch Basketball Tournament — raised more than $4,000 for Pediatric Brain Stem Tumors.

Secondly, players in the two championship games had a chance to do their thing in front of two NBA officials: Danny Crawford and Mark Davis. Dressed in their "work" uniforms, Crawford and Davis refereed Sunday's fifth-grade and eighth-grade games.

The even, which was held in Highland Park, also featured Billy Bayno, head coach for the University of Nevada-Las Vegas Running Rebels. He put a clinic on for the fifth-grade division.

Seven teams competed in the fifth-grade division. The Highwood Tigers, paced by Dan Siegel, Josh Barlestein, Jullian Kenner, Chris Wrobelski, Anthony Maeoni, Tellof Lundevall, Brad Deutsch and Jim Risi defeated the Team 24/7 by the score of 55-28 in the championship.

In the 5-team eighth-grade championship, Northedge beat Galazy 55-37. Northedge's standouts included Phil Lubin, Scott Smith, Shawn Wallace, Adam Gilbert and John Schyer.
