The Lake Forest Children’s Theatre Company raises the curtain for Rory

As the Director of The Lake Forest Children’s Theatre Company, Margo Proeh knows how to get the most out of the young actors who find their way to her stage. While she continues to develop the performance skills of students around the Chicago area, she also carries on her commitment to The Rory David Deutsch Foundation.

For the last fifteen years, the company has invited children aged five to thirteen, regardless of their previous experience, to join a twelve-week program. This program culminates in fifteen staged performances of a selected work. A portion of the proceeds from these performances is donated to the fight against pediatric brain tumors. “The energy and enthusiasm that our students exhibit in our productions reflects The Foundation’s ongoing effort to nurture the strength and character of our children,” Margo said.
With locations in Highland Park, Deerfield, Lake Forest, Winnetka, River Forest, and Chicago, the company meets for rehearsals once a week until the first curtain rises. “Every child that enrolls in the program plays a vital role in our final performances,” stated Margo. “Guided by a production staff that is skilled in musical theater, the students learn through the rehearsal process. They achieve the basic skills of dance, drama, and music, but also develop their social and personal skills as well.”

The company’s fall musical, “Guys and Dolls Jr.,” included all the professionalism of a Broadway show, with everything from costumes to set lighting. However, Margo stresses to her students that their creative expression is a contribution to the greater good. “Our relationship with The Foundation helps us demonstrate to the kids that their performance can actually help someone in need,” she said. “We want to expose them to the performing arts in a non-competitive environment. They are encouraged to explore their own creative voices. Children’s Theatre is a fun and entertaining way for students to also learn discipline, responsibility, teamwork, dedication, and respect for others.”

For the “Guys and Dolls Jr.” performances, different students played the main roles at different venues. The shows for the Lake Forest, Deerfield, Highland Park, and Highwood locations were held at The Cressey Center at The Lake Forest Academy on December 8th through 10th. Productions for the Menomonee Club/Chicago location were performed December 12th and 13th at The Anthenaeum Theater. The Winnetka presentations on January 15th through 17th, occurred at The Winnetka Community House, while the River Forest show on January 20th, took place at The Trinity High School in River Forest.

In the spring, the company will stage “High School Musical,” based on the film that became a favorite with kids and teens. The film aired this year on the Disney Channel. For the effort they give and the support they offer, The Lake Forest Children’s Theatre Company certainly deserves a standing ovation.
