New Research Program at Children’s Memorial will Search for a Cure

A report from Mickey Caplan of the Medical Advisory Board

Cutting-edge research to find a cure for pediatric brain tumors is on the horizon. The medical advisory board of the Rory David Deutsch Foundation met in June to formalize the framework for the new brain tumor research program, named in Rory's honor, at Children's Memorial Hospital.

The Foundation donated start-up funding of $250,000 to get the research program off the ground. The advisory board will recruit a highly qualified group of scientists to provide leadership in the under-funded field of pediatric brain and brain stem tumor research. The top priority, of course, will be to recruit a Ph.D. trained scientist to devote 100 percent of his or her time to developing and overseeing this crucial research.

The board is evaluating mechanisms for distributing additional research funding from the Foundation as well. The board may solicit grant proposals from promising scientific investigators with novel research ideas about the biology and treatment of brain tumors in children. We envision researchers around the world competing for these annual Rory David Deutsch Fellowships, which will accelerate the quest to find a cure.
